Objectives * High school physics teacher * College physics instructor (not requiring PhD) * Physicist working with Semiconductor Materials and Devices Skills * Encouraging and motivating students to think on their own * Finding simple experiments, models, and analogies to visualize physical phenomena * Making connections among phenomena, within Physics and between Physics and other sciences * Teaching with the students: they learn by teaching new subjects, in collaboration with one another * Making continual connections between the Physics textbook and daily reality * Encouraging students to look for information in as many sources as possible * Using computers in teaching Experience September 1990 - present Physics Teacher, Colegiul National "Gh.Munteanu-Murgoci" High School, Braila, Romania * Taught first through seventh year physics 1990-present. (In Romania, all students take at least five years of physics, starting in sixth grade. Those who elect a science profile take a total of seven years of physics.) * Taught Informatics 2000-2002. * Typical teaching load is 18 50-minute classes per week. Some years it is higher, once as high as 38 classes. * Trained students for the national competitions of Physics, with great success, beginning with my first year as a teacher. My students qualified, step by step, at the local stage of the Olympiad, the district one and the national stage. (Usually from the Braila district about 4-5 students are qualified for the national stage) The best performance was the participation of a student in the large team (15 students) of Romania for the international Olympiad of Physics. * My students participated, not only in the Olympiad, but in other Physics competitions too, with local or national participation ("Stefan Procopiu", organized by the district Iasi - national; "Valcovici", Galati - regional; "Evrika" Braila - national and others). Participated at the Olympiad not only by training students, but also in the team of teachers who correct papers and propose topics. * Participated every year in the teachers' teams for the national exams at the final of studies' cycle, baccalaureate and others (school-leaving examination). * The competition's participation and results raise the prestige of the school, so the best children from town choose our school to attend the 9-12 level courses. * Organized many extracurricular events. Excursions for one to 10 days, with different and multiple objectives. The last one was a visit to planetarium. (It was great to correlate this the subject of the chapter we are studying: Forces: the gravitational force, the centrifugal force.) We camp at the sea side, in the mountains, visit cultural objectives like monasteries and museums, and meet students from other regions. * I am participating in a project for introducing IT in teaching, the AEL (Assisted Electronic Learning) project. July 1990 - September 1990 Librarian Panait Istrate Public Library, Braila, Romania * Reviewed new books to determine likely reader interest. August 1989 - July 1990 Physicist, Intreprinderea de Utilaj Tehnologic, Spectral Laboratory, Bistrita, Romania * Worked to increase speed and precision of material composition analyses by using spectral methods in place of previously used chemical methods. * During this time I attended a one-week course on spectral analysis by fluorescence. Sept 1984 - June 1989 Student, Bucharest University, Bucharest, Romania * MS (equivalent) in Physics, specializing in Semiconductor Materials and Devices. * Included coursework in methods of teaching physics. Education * June 1989: MS (equivalent) in Physics from Bucharest University, specializing in Technological Physics. * 2002: BS in Cybernetics from the Academy of Economic Studies. (This "cybernetics" is a program in economics.) Certification * September 1993: third level Romanian teaching certificate, with a score of 9.75 of 10 on the exam. This is the basic certificate required for teaching. The certificate requires coursework on education, written and oral exams on physics and methods of teaching physics, and a written exam on pedagogy. * September 1997: second level teaching certificate, again scoring 9.75 of 10. Thus is an optional advanced teaching certificate, requiring coursework and exams as for the third level, but more advanced. * Currently pursuing first level certification. This is a still more advanced optional certificate, involving special examination by a local team and an oral examination at the University of Bucharest, Faculty of Physics, to be completed in 2006. As part of this, I am writing a paper on "Special Devices: Organic and Inorganic Semiconductors". Work Eligibility Romanian citizen. Preparatory legal work for US employment has been done by MACS America, 1802 N University Dr, Suite 100A, Ft Lauderdale FL 33322. For details call Philip Farnhill at 954 424 9391.
