Tools

Unisys MCP (Libra/ClearPath NX/LX/A‑Series) applications and systems programming for over thirty-five years. Excellent command of ALGOL, FORTRAN, COBOL, WFL, DASDL, DMSII, system commands and utilities, performance monitoring. Extensive knowledge of user interfaces and system internals.
Extensive knowledge of the PostScript language.
Hand-coded HTML and CSS for personal web site.
Basic knowledge of SQL.
Productivity tools: Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office use (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint). Basic knowledge of many other productivity tools, including Photoshop and Illustrator.

Experience

April 1983 - present	Contractor and consultant on Unisys MCP application, system, and training projects. Self-employed except Dec 2002 - Mar 2003. Most projects from 1993-present as (sub)contractor to MGS Inc, a software company in Richmond VA. Major projects shown in entries below.
June 2003 - Jan 2010	William O'Neil + Co (WON): Multiple projects listed below (subcontract via MGS Inc and G Force). Skills: software development, database design, writing and communication, problem solving, technical leadership, working alone and in teams. Tools: ALGOL, COBOL, WFL, PostScript, SQL, productivity tools.
	2006-2010: support WON's migration from MCP to Windows, including extensive analysis of very old programs and technology transfer of results, plus modification of programs to support migration. 2005-2006: Aid in WON's development of new publication, modifying old programs, developing PostScript framework, interfacing with print shop. 2005: Updated WON's Earnings Information subsystem to extend a 25-year limitation. Sole analyst and programmer; project required updating about 100 programs. 2004: technical lead to convert WON's flat-file systems to Unisys DMSII database systems. 2003: software technical lead to convert WON's mainframe (MCP) system from 12-year-old hardware and 6-year-old software to current, supported hardware and software.
December 2002 - March 2003	University of Washington: Worked with UW to correct problems in their retirement records. (Employed by Macrostaff, Inc as consultant.) Skills: software development, writing, problem solving, working in a team. Tools: COBOL, productivity tools.
Jan 2001 - Feb 2002	Capital One Financial: acted as technical lead to convert half a million lines of COBOL74 to COBOL85 for Capital One (a client of MGS Inc), renovating programs to use COBOL85 features. Designed and programmed support tools for the project. Developed and taught classes (at Capital One) in COBOL85 for COBOL74 programmers. Skills: writing and communication, problem solving, flexibility, technical leadership, working in a team and alone. Tools: COBOL, productivity tools.
Apr 2000 - Dec 2000	Comdial: wrote database conversion programs for Comdial, an electronics manufacturer and client of MGS Inc. Skills: software development, database design, communications, working alone and in a team. Tools: COBOL, DMSII.
Aug 1998 - Jun 1999	MGS Inc: designed and implemented parts of PCS, a program testing and validation system. Installed PCS and added features for three MGS clients, and helped use PCS for Y2K testing for two MGS clients. Skills: software development, writing and communication, working alone and in a team. Tools: ALGOL, productivity tools.
Jun 1998 - Feb 1999	Paradigm4: wrote routines to interface specialized TCP/IP adaptor to communications software on Unisys MCP mainframe for a contract which Paradigm4 had with FDLE (Florida Department of Law Enforcement). May 1994 - Aug 1994 also Mar 1996 - Nov 1998	MGS Inc: developed Viewpoint/Sightline Host Reporter software for Viewpoint/Sightline Capacity Manager. Developed and wrote end-user documentation. Skills: software development, writing and communication, working alone. Tools: ALGOL, productivity tools.

Apr 1995 - Sept 1995	Capital One Financial: aided in converting the communications system (Gateway to COMS), and updating COBOL68 programs to COBOL74, for Capital One (a client of MGS). Nov 1993 - Dec 1995	Capital One Financial: acted as technical lead and primary designer and programmer to multistream and otherwise improve performance of critical path programs for Capital One (a client of MGS). Apr 2000 - present	Personal project: developed and maintained personal web site (http://paleo.org/) using hand-coded HTML and CSS, and KompoZer. Skills: problem solving, working alone. Tools: HTML, CSS, KompoZer.
Jun 1989 - Aug 1992	Metalogic S.à r.l.: supported and enhanced Metalogic’s automated operations software, especially Supervisor and Flex. Wrote documentation for new features.
